When does your Car Need an Oil Change? – June 21st, 2011

Taking your car for a routine oil check up is very much like having your own hair undergo regular hot oil treatment, (assuming of course you have hair). Dirty oil running through your car’s engine is definitely not a good thing to have, and having it checked also allows the experts to check out the rest of your car for potential problems.

Some say that you should do oil change for your car every three months, and some say that you should do this every 3,000 miles traveled. This all depends on how often you use your car, and the make and model of it. A good way to check if your car really needs an oil change is to place a dipstick into the oil chamber. If it comes out black (or any color close to it), then your car definitely needs an oil change pronto, as a light brown transparent color is what you should be looking for. You can also check the oil change light indicator inside your car. If this comes on, then you know you are about to set that appointment with your neighborhood maintenance crew.

You might notice that with an older car, you might have to have this routine oil changes more often compared to a newer car. You may also have to change your oil filter when you do this. Do not wait for the oil in your car to turn black – once it becomes murky, it is not protecting the engine as good as it should be.

Take this time to chat with your maintenance crew about the condition of your car. Is there something that feels wrong in the suspension? Is your car air conditioning working properly? Chances are, they can do a simple spot check and assess what else is needing attention in your car.
